SAFETY

Safety is probably the most important area for consideration, even though it is often overshadowed by the environmental regulations.  Many facilities such as refineries and petrochemical plants go to great extremes prior to routine maintenance or turnarounds to isolate sewer openings from the atmosphere. Why? It is to prevent an ignition source from igniting combustible sewer gases and causing a sewer explosion.

There are many ways to cover a sewer opening. The most common is some type of fire blanket covered with sand or sand bags or a plastic or vinyl container filled with water. Neither method provides a positive seal because the surface, normally concrete, is never perfectly smooth or without cracks and chips. One problem area associated with using sand bags or plastic water containers is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to move equipment such as cranes and forklifts in and around a unit during a turnaround without damaging the seal covering the sewer opening. Another problem with using sand, sand bags or vinyl water containers during a turnaround is that flooding can occur. Flooding can create major safety problems during turnarounds. Suppose that a liquid hydrocarbon spilled, spread on the water and somehow ignited. How would you contain it? Would you fight the fire with water and cause the flooded area and the fire to increase? Flooding could not occur if you were using Envirosafe Sewer Seals.

Envirosafe Sewer Seals for surface drain catch basins and pump hubs provide a solution to most, if not all, of the problems associated with using sand, sand bags or vinyl water containers. The water seal used in the patented Envirosafe Sewer Seals provide a positive seal that prevents any combustible sewer gases within the sewer system from coming in contact with any ignition source, thereby virtually eliminating the possibility of a sewer explosion. The difficulty of moving equipment around during a turnaround is eliminated because the Envirosafe Sewer Seal fits inside the existing catch basin under the existing grating – not above it. The flooding problem is eliminated because the Envirosafe Sewer Seals provide continuous water flow.

There is nothing in today’s market that provides the safety of the Envirosafe Sewer Seals.

  • Environmental Advantages

    - Eliminates VOC and Toxic emissions to the atmosphere.

    - Eliminates excess water used to seal catch basins.

    - Eliminates use of concrete catch basins which can crack and contribute to ground contamination.
  • Safety Advantages

    - Prevents emission of toxic vapors to atmosphere.

    - Provides continuous water flow while maintaining a water seal.

    - Prevents water build-up during hot work.

  • Environmental Advantages

    - Enhances the environment by reducing solids and hazardous waste build-up in sewer drainage systems.

    - Eliminates VOC and Toxic emissions to the atmosphere.

    - Eliminates use of concrete catch basins which can crack and contribute to ground contamination.
