Many facilities such as refineries and petrochemical plants go to great extremes prior to routine maintenance or turnarounds to isolate sewer openings from the atmosphere. Why? There are many ways to cover a sewer opening. The most common is some type of fire blanket covered with sand or sand bags or a plastic or vinyl container filled with water.
